TryBillSplit is fundamentally designed around zero-knowledge principles. We don't store your receipts, we don't ask for your phone number, and we don't sell your data.
No User Accounts
No email address, password, or phone number required. You use the calculator immediately.
100% Client-Side
Bill calculations and group expense entries live strictly in your device's browser memory.
Zero Fund Holding
We never handle, process, or hold money. All payments happen directly between friends.
1. Information We Do NOT Collect
Unlike legacy bill-splitting applications, TryBillSplit operates completely without backend databases for user accounts. We do not collect, process, or store:
- Your real name, contact list, or personal identification.
- Your financial account numbers, credit/debit card numbers, or banking PINs.
- Your location data, GPS coordinates, or IP address history.
- Receipt images or photographic uploads (all item names and numbers are processed in-memory).
2. How Your Bill Data is Handled
When you enter items, prices, tax rates, or participants into TryBillSplit:
A. Browser Memory (State): All math calculation logic runs on your device inside your browser's JavaScript engine. No data is transmitted to an application server.
B. URL-Compressed State: When you tap "Share Link", TryBillSplit serializes and compresses your bill state into a URL parameter (?s=...) using LZ-based compression. Anyone with the URL can reconstruct the view in their own browser. Because this state is stored inside the link itself, no server database is required.
C. Local Storage: For convenience, your active session and up to 10 recent split summaries are cached in your browser's localStorage so you don't lose work when refreshing. You can delete individual or all recent sessions at any time with one click from the "Recents" drawer.
3. Peer-to-Peer Direct Settlements
TryBillSplit is strictly a mathematical calculation tool. We calculate net balances and debt simplification to show who owes whom.
TryBillSplit never acts as a payment aggregator, gateway, or merchant. We do not touch, transfer, or escrow your funds. Group members settle debts directly between themselves using their own preferred payment methods (cash, wire transfer, or local payment apps).
4. Cookies & Analytics
TryBillSplit does not use tracking cookies, advertising trackers, or third-party behavioral profiling scripts. We believe web utilities should respect user sovereignty.
We use browser localStorage exclusively for:
trybillsplit_theme: Storing your preference for Dark or Light mode.trybillsplit_active_session: Restoring your in-progress calculation.trybillsplit_recents: Storing your previous 10 receipts locally on your machine.
